Tips for Choosing a Roofing Contractor

Here are some important things to consider when choosing a roofing contractor.

References

A reputable and experienced roofing contractor should be able to provide references of their work. This is basically a list of previous customers who are willing to share their experience with the contractor you are considering.

Insurance

This is item is particularly important when reviewing the proposed contract. The contractor should carry liability insurance and worker's compensation insurance in case of any untoward occurrence. Without the proper insurance, you as the homeowner may be held liable. Ask him to present copies of the current insurance certificates before the job begins.

Product choices

A good contractor should be able to provide a variety of options for your roofing needs. Whether it be dependent on the result you want or your budget, your contractor should be able to offer choices and help you understand the pros and cons of each one. This shows that they do care about getting the result just the way you want it to be.

Tools

What tools or methods are they using to make the job quick, safe and satisfactory? This may take some research on your part but it will be worth it. Pay particular attention to whether or not the contractor you're considering is using any roofingservice software as this can affect the quality of their work. Take the initiative to research online about software for roofing companies.

Permits

Be familiar with local codes and ordinances to make sure that they are observed. Double check any zoning ordinances as you may be required to post notice before the job can be started. It is also important to take about permits. Are the permit costs included in the proposed contract? Who will obtain the permit?

Getting a roof built over your head is no small matter, so you should make sure that you’re getting the best service for you.

  1. People will research and research trying to find the best person for every job. If you like what they do and they are willing to work with you, hire them! References can be an important part of that as well if someone you know has someone they like. http://www.bestfutureroof.com

  2. These are really important ideas to keep in mind when finding a roofing contractor. I'm thinking about getting a roofing contractor's quote and opinion on my roof. If I can afford it, I will get a small leak fixed. Thanks so much for sharing!

  3. It never occurred to me that you should have insurance as a roofing contractor. If I ever start up my own company, I will have to make sure of that. I wouldn't want to be uncovered if something were to go wrong.

  4. I agree that it's really important to check and make sure they have insurance. That way, if someone gets injured on the job, you won't be liable. Any good roofing company will have insurance of some kind. If they don't, I wouldn't recommend going with them at all.

  6. I wouldn't have thought to check whether or not he had liability insurance, but you're right that that's important. It would be unfortunate to be held responsible for something that was the roofer's fault. I'm definitely going to keep that in mind while looking for a roofer.

I remember a neighbor of mine went with an uninsured contractor for one of their home remodeling projects and it ended up causing all kinds of problems. 15. I honestly think product choices are important because you want to get something that actually will hold up for a really long time. The roof of the house is one of the most important parts of your house because without it, you are unprotected. I think it is important to review the different products and see what fits your budget and what will be the strongest.

  18. It's a good idea to make sure that your contractor has insurance. You don't want someone to be hurt in the best of times, but it is so much worse if you are held liable. That can happen if they don't have the right insurance. It always pays to make sure that you are getting a quality product. And more goes into what quality you are getting than just the materials being used. http://www.rippysroofing.com/

  20. I completely agree: it's so important to look at references when choosing a contractor. A lot of people just want to get their roof finished and settle for the lowest bidder, but it's such a big project that it's worth doing a little research. References are the best way to ensure quality because they're hard to fake if you're able to speak with past clients yourself. Thanks for this article, it was very thorough! http://jtroofing.biz

I want to have my roof made out of a colored metal, my roof also has a lot of features and so finding a reasonably priced offer is tough. I will maybe extend my search to the surrounding towns and see if that helps.

  37. Good point about seeing what kind of equipment the roofing contractor has. You are the first person that has mentioned checking to see if they use safety gear. It would be really too bad to have someone get hurt on the job while working on your home because of a negligent contractor. If they aren't concerned for their own employees safety, it is also likely they are cutting corners in other places too.

  40. All roofing contractors should have a permit, that should be the first thing that you check. Another thing that you mention which is also a good thing to check is the materials they are using. You wouldn't want to hire a contractor only to find out they are using poor quality materials. I know that when I hire someone, I want them to be able to do the job at hand and to do it correctly. http://awkuettel.com/services/roofing/

It sounds like the most important component is probably hiring a contractor that has quality insurance! I had no idea that the homeowner could be liable for something that occurred during the roofing process, so it makes sense that liability insurance would be a top priority.
